HOW TO TEST GOLD WITH A SCRATCH STONE & ACID TESTING SOLUTION:

Before Testing

Wear protective gloves and eye protection and work in a well-ventilated area. Gold testing solutions contain corrosive acids and should be handled carefully. Keep testing solutions away from children, skin, eyes, clothing, and surrounding surfaces. Always follow the safety information provided on the product label and Safety Data Sheet.

For best results, make sure the gold sample and scratch stone are clean and dry before beginning.

For kits containing a scratch stone plus 10K, 14K, 18K, and 22K testing solutions:

Create a Test Streak: Firmly rub the suspected gold across the scratch stone several times to produce a clear metal streak.

Start with the 10K Solution: Apply a small drop of 10K testing solution to part of the streak.

Check the Result: If the streak dissolves, the sample is likely below 10K or may not be gold. If the streak remains, continue testing with the next solution.

Move Up Through the Karats: Create a fresh streak or use a clean section of the stone and repeat the process with the 14K solution, followed by the 18K and 22K solutions as needed.

Identify the Approximate Range: The highest-karat solution that leaves the streak intact provides an indication of the sample's approximate gold purity.

Example: If the streak remains after applying 14K solution but dissolves when tested with 18K solution, the sample is likely between those two purity levels.

If the streak remains when tested with the 22K solution, the sample may be approximately 22K gold or higher.

Between Tests:

After observing the result, apply the test acid neutralizer to the used area of the scratch stone according to the neutralizer instructions. Allow the neutralizer to contact the remaining testing solution, then carefully blot the area with a disposable paper towel.

Make sure the testing area is clean and dry before beginning the next test. Using the neutralizer between testing solutions helps remove residual acid and reduce the chance of cross contamination between tests.

For the cleanest results, use a fresh section of the scratch stone for each karat test whenever possible.

IMPORTANT TESTING TIPS:

Begin with the lowest-karat solution and work upward when using a multi-solution kit.
Use a clearly visible metal streak for easier observation.
Use a fresh or thoroughly cleaned section of the stone between different testing solutions.
Never touch the acid bottle or dropper tip directly to the scratch stone or sample.
Recap each testing solution immediately after use.
Do not mix testing solutions together.
Neutralizer is intended to help neutralize residual testing acid during cleanup; it does not replace gloves, eye protection, proper ventilation, or other safety precautions.
Acid testing provides a preliminary indication of gold purity rather than an exact assay.

A NOTE FOR GOLD PROSPECTORS:

Naturally occurring gold can vary considerably in purity and may contain silver, copper, or other minerals. Gold flakes, nuggets, and specimens may also contain attached rock or mineral material that can affect testing. For these reasons, acid testing is best used as a preliminary field or home identification method rather than a precise measurement of gold content. For exact gold purity, composition, or value, additional professional testing may be required.
