A geode is a rounded rock with a hidden cavity inside, often lined with quartz or calcite crystals. They form when minerals slowly fill a pocket in the rock over thousands of years. From the outside they look ordinary, which is exactly why cracking one open is so satisfying, you never know what is inside until you break it.

Always wear the safety goggles. Wrap the geode in a cloth or an old sock to contain flying chips, set it on a hard surface, and tap firmly around its middle, turning as you go, rather than swinging for one big smash. Working around the seam helps it split cleanly and protects the crystals inside.
