When water and material move within a gold pan, heavier particles settle toward the bottom, while lighter material is gradually washed over the edge and out of your gold pan. The process is simple in principle, but effective panning depends on controlled movement, patience and an understanding of how gold behaves in water.

For recreational prospectors, a gold pan serves two important purposes. It can recover gold from a small amount of material, and it can act as a field-testing tool when evaluating a creek, river, gravel bar, or paydirt sample. Even experienced prospectors who use sluice boxes and other processing equipment, often begin and finish with a pan, because it provides immediate feedback and precise control over concentrates.

2. How Placer Gold Forms🪨

Much of the gold recovered by recreational panners is known as placer gold. It begins as gold contained within solid rock; over time, weathering, erosion, freezing, thawing, moving water and other environmental conditions, break down the surrounding rock and release pieces of gold.

Once freed, gold can be carried downstream. However, because gold is much denser and heavier than other material, it settles when water loses enough energy to continue moving it downstream. Repeated floods and seasonal runoff can gradually concentrate gold in particular layers, pockets and sections of a waterway. 

Gold may eventually work its way downward through loose gravel until it reaches bedrock, compact clay, or another layer it cannot easily penetrate. It can also collect in cracks, depressions and low-pressure areas created by rocks or changes in the stream channel. These natural concentration points are the places prospectors attempt to locate and sample.

Your first few gold panning trips will involve more learning than actual gold recovery, and we'll be the first to say that is to be expected and completely normal! Panning requires several coordinated movements: settling the heavies, washing away lighter material, maintaining control of the pan, and slowing down as the concentrate becomes smaller.

Beginners often worry they will immediately wash gold out of the pan; this is again, a completely normal reaction, we've been there! Small losses are possible, particularly when movements are too fast or aggressive, but the density of gold helps it remain near the bottom when the material is properly stratified. Practicing with known paydirt or adding a few visible, reusable test pieces to ordinary sand can help you learn how material moves before visiting a natural waterway.

You should also set realistic expectations about what you may find. Recreational panners are more likely to recover tiny flakes or specks, often called “colors,” versus large pickers or gold nuggets. As a beginner, it's important to define success as simply confirming that gold is present, improving your technique and learning how to recognize a promising area. Wear Appropriate Footwear: Choose waterproof footwear with dependable traction and support. Waders or waterproof boots can help in shallow water and are highly recommended, but they should never encourage you to enter current that is deeper or faster than you can safely manage.

Avoid Unstable Banks: Do not dig into undercut or steep banks. Soil, rocks, trees and other material can collapse without warning. Historical mining does not guarantee that easily recoverable gold remains, but it confirms that gold has occurred in the drainage. Geological reports can also reveal whether the area contains the rock types and erosion history associated with placer deposits.

For federal land research, the Bureau of Land Management’s Mineral & Land Records System provides mapping and reports related to mining claims and other land records. Online research should still be followed by confirmation with the agency office that manages the specific location, since digital claim data and mapped boundaries may not tell the entire access story.

Keep a short list of potential locations rather than depending on a single spot. Water levels, access conditions, private boundaries, seasonal rules and crowding may make your first choice unsuitable when you arrive.

6. Gold Panning Laws, Claims & Permission⚖️

Gold panning rules are determined by a combination of land ownership, agency regulations, state law, local restrictions, mining claims, water protections and the equipment being used. A location that appears open to the public is not automatically open to mineral removal.

On certain BLM-administered lands, nonmotorized gold panning may qualify as casual use when it causes little or no surface disturbance. However, the land must be open to mineral entry, the activity must not be locally prohibited, and the site must be checked for existing mining claims. The BLM states that recreational prospectors should not pan on another person’s active claim without the claimant’s permission.

National parks require particular caution. Collecting and recreational gold panning are generally prohibited across the National Park System, although a limited number of individual park units allow panning under location-specific permits and restrictions. Never assume that rules from one park apply to another.

7. How to Read a River or Creek 🌊

Reading a waterway means looking for places where heavy material is likely to slow, drop and remain concentrated. Gold does not settle randomly. It follows the movement of water and tends to accumulate where the stream loses energy or where natural barriers trap dense particles. Promising areas may include:

Bedrock Cracks and Depressions: Exposed bedrock can act as a natural barrier. Gold may settle into cracks, potholes, seams and low spots that protect it from being moved again.

Hard Clay or False Bedrock: A compact clay layer can stop gold from moving farther downward. Material resting directly above it may be worth sampling.

Downstream Side of Large Rocks: A boulder can interrupt the current and create a slower pocket behind it. Heavy material may settle in this protected area.

Inside Bends: Water generally moves more slowly along the inside of a bend, allowing sand, gravel, and potentially fine gold to accumulate.

Gravel and Point Bars: The upstream end, lower layers, and transitions around a gravel bar may contain concentrated heavy material.

Below Rapids or Waterfalls: Fast water can transport material through a narrow or turbulent section before losing energy in the slower pool below.

Natural Riffles: Irregular bedrock, closely spaced rocks, roots, and crevices can act much like riffles in a sluice box by creating protected pockets.

Government recreational panning guidance identifies downstream sides of boulders, inside bends, point bars, deep pools, areas below rapids, and bedrock crevices as places worth testing. These features are indicators, not guarantees. A visually convincing spot can be barren, while a less dramatic patch of gravel may produce several colors. The only reliable way to compare locations is to collect samples.

8. Essential Gold Panning Equipment🔨

A basic gold panning setup does not need to be complicated! The most important pieces of equipment are those that help you collect, size, process, inspect and store material. We highly recommend starting out with just a few pieces of equipment and adding more gear later, as your experience and techniques improve with time.

Gold PansThe gold pan is the primary recovery tool. Built-in riffles help retain heavy material, as lighter sand and gravel are washed out of the pan (the next section below covers how to choose a gold pan).

Classifier Screens: A classifier removes oversized rocks and separates material by size before panning. More consistently sized material is easier to process and less likely to overcrowd the pan. As a beginner, don't skip this step (more on this below too).

Shovel & Scoop: A compact shovel, hand trowel or scoop helps collect gravel from exposed bars, active stream material and accessible pockets.

Five Gallon Bucket: A bucket can hold classified material, support a classifier screen, can help to transport equipment, and provide a secondary container for final cleanup.

Snuffer or Snifter Bottle: A snifter bottle uses suction to collect small flakes from the bottom of a pan, without requiring you to touch or chase them.

Glass Collection Vials: Water-filled vials provide a secure place to store recovered gold in the field. Always store them in a safe, sealable pouch or container so they don't get lost!

Tweezers and Magnifier: Tweezers help collect larger pieces, while a magnifier makes it easier to inspect small particles and distinguish gold from similar-looking minerals.

Black-Sand Magnet: A magnet can remove some magnetic material like black sand from your paydirt. It should be used carefully and in stages, so fine gold is not accidentally carried away with trapped material.

Backpack or Bag: If you're planning a day, or even an afternoon on the river, having a reliable backpack that holds some of your gear will help immensely, keeping gold prospecting equipment together and organized, along with water, snacks and personal belongings as needed.

Personal and Safety Gear: Gloves, sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, water, sun protection and a basic first-aid kit should be treated as part of the prospecting setup rather than optional extras. 

9. How To Choose A Gold Pan 💭

Gold pans are available in different sizes, colors, and feature different finishes and riffle configurations. The best choice depends on your experience, hand size and importantly, the type of material and volume of material you're comfortable processing.

Pan Size: A gold pan with a large diameter (e.g. 14 inches) can hold more material, but becomes heavier and more difficult to control when full. Gold pans that are smaller in diameter (e.g. 10 inches), are lightweight and convenient for final cleanup, or for kids and new hobbyists. For beginners, we highly recommend starting out with a smaller gold pan, it will give you more control when processing and allows you to work through a more manageable amount of paydirt.

Pan Color: The color of your gold pan affects visibility of gold and other material. Dark pans (e.g. black), can create strong contrast with bright gold, while green or blue pans are better to use when working with black sand. Choosing a color that provides clear contrast with both gold and the local sediment can reduce eye strain during cleanup.

Riffle Design: Large riffles help work through more coarse material during the early stages of panning. Smaller riffles provide additional control, and are ideal to work with as material volume is reduced down to finer material. ASR Outdoor Dual riffle gold pans offer both options.

For beginners, our recommendation is the 10 or 12 inch dual riffle pans in green colorway, as they give you many zones to work with (large riffles, fine riffles and two smooth sides), plus a good base or "gold trap" at the bottom of the gold pan. 10. How to Classify Raw Material Before Gold Panning🥅

Classification separates raw material into more consistent size groups, before it reaches the gold pan. Large rocks take up space, make stratification harder and can trap smaller particles in clay or attached sediment. Removing them allows the pan to work more efficiently, and is highly recommended for those new to the hobby.

Place a classifier screen over a bucket, large tub or container, or alternatively if you're packing super light, use our small mini classifiers to place over a gold pan. Shake the screen or rinse the material with water so smaller particles fall through. Break apart clay carefully and wash dirt from larger cobbles before removing them. Always inspect the oversized material before returning it. Larger flakes, nuggets, mineral specimens, and gold-bearing pieces of quartz may remain above the screen. 

Beginners often start with a screen measuring approximately 1/2 or 1/4 inch. Finer screens can be useful for concentrates or locations known for very fine or flour gold. It is not always necessary to classify material extremely fine; select an opening size that matches the material and the equipment you plan to use.

When stacking multiple classifiers, place the screen with the largest openings on top and progress toward smaller openings below. This separates material into several groups without repeatedly starting over.

11. A Better Way to Sample a New Location📍

One of the most common beginner mistakes is choosing a promising-looking spot and digging there for the entire day. A more effective approach is to sample several locations before committing your time and energy! Begin by identifying multiple targets, such as:

  • Behind a large boulder
  • Inside a bend
  • A bedrock crack
  • The head of a gravel bar
  • A low clay layer
  • Material below a rapid
  • The meeting point of two channels

Take a similar amount of material from each location and process each sample separately. Record where it came from and count the visible colors recovered. And, consistent sample sizes make comparisons more meaningful.

When one location produces better results, test around it in a grid or line. Sample upstream, downstream, left, right, and at different depths. This helps determine whether you found an isolated flake or part of a larger concentration.

Do not judge a location from one pan alone. A single sample may land between productive pockets. At the same time, repeated empty samples are useful information. They allow you to move rather than spending the entire day processing low-potential material.

A small notebook or phone log can record:

  • Sample number
  • Location or coordinates
  • Depth
  • Type of material
  • Presence of clay or bedrock
  • Amount of black sand
  • Number and approximate size of colors
  • Photo of the sample location

This turns casual panning into a repeatable field-testing process.

12. How to Pan for Gold Step by Step✅

1. Classify Material

Collect raw material and remove large rocks before filling the classifier screen. Once classified, drain most of the water out of your bucket or container and scoop paydirt from here into your chosen gold pan.

2. Fill the Pan Partway

A half-full pan is easier to control than one filled to the rim. Beginners should start with smaller batches until the motion feels comfortable (about half a scoop or one full scoop is plenty to start with).

3. Submerge and Saturate the Material

Place the pan under calm or gently moving water (or just fill the pan with lots of water, almost to the brim). Break apart remaining clumps and wash sediment from stones before removing them if they made it past the classifier screen.

4. Stratify the Material in Your Pan

Hold the pan nearly level underwater and shake it from side to side. This allows dense gold and heavy minerals to work downward while lighter less valuable material rises.

5. Wash Away Lighter Material

Tilt the pan slightly forward (or towards you if preferred), and use a gentle dipping or forward washing motion to allow the top layer of material to move over the edge. Do not empty the pan continuously. Wash away a small amount, level the pan, add more water if needed, re-stratify and repeat.

6. Slow Down as Material Volume Shrinks

Once only a small amount of dark concentrate remains, use shorter, gentler movements. Keep the material wet and maintain control of the water inside the pan.

7. Separate the Final Concentrates

Move the concentrate to one side and use a small amount of water to fan or roll lighter black sand away from the lowest point. Gold should remain behind if the motion is slow and controlled.

8. Collect Found Gold

Should you be lucky enough to find gold, use a snifter bottle, pair of tweezers or another suitable recovery tool to collect visible pieces of gold. Store them in a secure, water-filled vial or other durable, sealable container.

If Time Allows, Recheck the Tailings

Beginners may benefit from re-panning discarded material in a second container. This reveals whether your technique is too aggressive and allows any potentially lost gold to be recovered.

The fundamental process is repeated stratification followed by the gradual removal of lighter material to reach the "heavies" and if you're lucky, gold!

13. How to Tell Gold Apart from Mica or Pyrite ("Fools Gold")🌟

Gold, mica, pyrite and chalcopyrite can all create bright flashes in a pan, but they behave differently when examined closely.

Color: Natural gold generally maintains a rich yellow color in both sunlight and shade. Mica often flashes only at certain angles and may appear silvery, pale yellow, or transparent. Pyrite usually has a brighter brass or metallic appearance.

Shape: Gold commonly appears rounded, flattened, irregular, or folded. Pyrite often forms angular grains or small crystals. Mica occurs as thin, flat flakes or sheets.

Movement in the Pan: Gold tends to remain low in the pan because of its density, and move less easily. Mica or pyrite moves easily throughout your pan, and may appear to float or skate across the surface. 

Avoid relying on color alone. Observe how the particle moves, examine its shape with a magnifier and always save questionable material until it can be inspected under better conditions.

14. Common Beginner Gold Panning Mistakes to Avoid ❌

Filling the Pan Too Full: An overloaded pan is difficult to stratify and control. Start with less material and focus on technique.

Skipping Classification: Large rocks occupy space and make it harder to separate the finer material where small gold may be present.

Failing to Break Apart Clay: Clay can trap fine gold inside compact clumps. Saturate and break the material apart before washing it away.

Washing Too Aggressively: Fast, deep dips may remove more material than intended. Use controlled movements and re-stratify frequently.

Failing to Stratify: Simply swirling the pan is not enough. Dense material must first be encouraged to settle below the lighter sediment.

Rushing the Final Cleanup: The closer you get to the bottom of the pan, the slower your movements should become.

Discarding Oversized Material Without Inspection: Larger gold, mineral specimens, and gold-bearing quartz may remain above the classifier, not to mention fossils, rocks, teeth and more!

Chasing One Attractive Spot All Day: Sample multiple locations and compare results before processing a large amount of material.

Assuming Black Sand Guarantees Gold: Black sand shows that heavy minerals are concentrating, but it does not always prove that gold is present.

Using a Magnet Too Aggressively: Fine gold can become trapped in magnetic concentrate and accidentally removed.

Judging a Particle by Color Alone: Use movement, shape, softness, and streak to distinguish gold from pyrite or mica.

Ignoring Access and Claim Research: A productive-looking location may be private, claimed, protected, or closed to collection.

15. Responsible Prospecting🫡

Responsible prospecting protects waterways, wildlife, land access and the future of recreational gold panning. Work only where prospecting is permitted and use only approved equipment. Confine digging to appropriate active gravels rather than vegetated banks. Avoid undercutting roots, destabilizing shorelines, or creating new access trails.

Fill excavations as required, collect all equipment, and remove trash, fishing line, metal, and other debris you encounter. Use non-toxic recovery techniques. Mercury and other chemicals have no place in casual recreational panning.

Do not disturb cultural artifacts, historic mining structures, fossils, or archaeological material. Photograph unusual finds and report potentially significant objects to the appropriate land manager rather than removing them.

Respect other visitors and claim holders. Keep equipment from blocking trails, boat launches, fishing areas and narrow sections of the waterway. The goal should be simple: leave the location looking as though you were never there.

Should I use dish soap in my gold pan?

Some prospectors use a very small amount of a surfactant during controlled final cleanup to reduce surface tension. Do not add soap or other substances directly to a natural waterway. Save concentrates and perform this type of cleanup at home.

Can I use a sluice box instead of a gold pan?

A sluice box can process more material, but a pan is still useful for testing locations and finishing concentrates. Local rules may also allow panning while restricting sluices. Setting up a sluice box can be a tedious and time-consuming project not recommended for beginners to the hobby.
