The Benefits of Spending Time Outdoors: Mental, Physical, and Emotional Health
Is it just us, or does the body and brain feel elevated, heightened or fulfilled after spending time outside and in nature? We know we’re not the only ones; and, we know you’ve seen our commitment to it time and time again, being that it’s one our brands core values. Supporting the parasympathetic nervous system, better sleep, improved mindfulness and respect for the environment, reducing stress, and of course the physical benefits of any and all outdoor activities, are just a few of the reasons we continue to subscribe.
And, we understand that making time to #getoutisde, especially if it’s not second nature (no pun intended), could be intimidating: where does one begin? Our suggestion? Begin anywhere! An ocean swim, a hike, a bike ride, a trail run, fishing, a visit to your local community garden or farmers market, a dog walk, a sports game, or simply just sitting outside and letting that Vitamin D hit your face (with sunscreen already applied of course).
Whatever "being outdoors" means to you--international hiking adventure, backcountry gold prospecting excursion, summer stargazing session or family camping trip--ASR Outdoor is HERE for that! There are many benefits to getting outside and spending quality time with nature. Here at ASR Outdoor, we know the feeling of being locked in an office for 8 hours a day and not having the time or energy to go out and breathe some fresh air. That being said, we also know how rewarding it is to push past that feeling and get outside whenever you can.
Mental Health Benefits of Nature
Spending time outdoors has been shown to improve mental health. Research shows that nature can help reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. Being outside lowers cortisol, the hormone your body releases when you're stressed. Whether you’re walking in the forest or just sitting in a park, nature helps calm your mind. Disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature also boosts your mood by releasing endorphins, the body's natural “feel-good” chemicals. Spending time outdoors has also been found to increase creativity and improve focus, which helps with problem-solving and coming up with new ideas.

Physical Health Benefits of Outdoor Activities
The physical benefits of spending time outdoors are many. Activities like hiking, cycling, and even walking can improve your heart health and overall fitness. These activities help lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and lower the risk of conditions like obesity, diabetes, and stroke. Sunlight is also an important source of vitamin D, which is needed for bone health and a strong immune system. Just a few minutes of sunlight each day can boost your mood, give you more energy, and help you stay healthy. Spending time outside also helps improve your sleep by resetting your body’s natural sleep schedule, leading to better rest at night.
Emotional Health Benefits of Being in Nature
Spending time outside also has great emotional benefits. Nature can help you feel more connected to others. Whether you’re hiking with a friend or playing sports with family, outdoor activities can strengthen relationships and reduce feelings of loneliness. Nature also encourages mindfulness, helping you focus on the present moment. This can reduce invasive negative thoughts, improve your mood, and make you feel better overall. Activities like hiking or just walking in the park can give you time to think and reflect on your feelings. Being locked up at home can feel comfortable and safe but the outdoors has a natural healing effect when you go out and explore.
How to Incorporate Outdoor Wellness into Your Routine
Now that we know how good being outside is for your mind, body, and emotions, here are some easy ways to include outdoor time in your routine:
- Start Small: If you’re new to spending time outside, begin with short walks in a nearby park or around your neighborhood. Gradually spend more time outdoors as you get used to it.
- Try Outdoor Exercise: You can jog, do yoga, or cycle outside. Exercising outdoors helps you stay healthy while enjoying nature.
- Make Time for Nature: Even a few minutes outside each day can make a big difference. Try to spend time outdoors during lunch, after work, or on weekends.
- Reconnect with Nature on Weekends: Plan trips to natural places, like hiking in the mountains or camping by a lake. These trips help you feel more connected to nature.

Hike Recommendations:
Mount Pilchuck Trail – Famous for its Fire Lookout at the summit, is a challenging 5-mile hike that gains elevation quickly. The trail can be wet and muddy during the off-season but dries up in the summer. Along the way, you'll encounter several streams and scenic lookout points, offering beautiful views as you climb higher.
Twin Falls Trail - This is an easier 2.4-mile hike, with very little elevation gain, that still rewards you with stunning views of two waterfalls. The lower falls can be viewed from a lookout just a short detour from the main trail, which reconnects right after. Continue for another half-mile, and you'll reach the upper falls.
